National Recycling Inc. undertook a project at Bethlehem Steel Mill to dismantle and decommission and outdated power-conversion substation. This substation included (4) oversized transformers and a control centre room that consisted of electrical equipment that was to be removed in usable condition.
Bethlehem Steel requested that on-site dismantling of the large transformers was to be avoided. National Recycling Inc. complied with the client’s request by proposing to remove the transformers as one piece.
Items Removed:
- (4) Oversized Transformers- 25,000 KVA with a total weight of 90,000lbs per transformer-
- Oil Removal- Bethlehem steel had arranged for oil drainage and testing prior to awarding this project. Oil tests showed less than 50 PPM of PCB’s.
- Substation control room- consisted of Motor Control Centres, Breaker Cabinets and sensitive electronic monitoring equipment
- Removal of all connecting cable and medium dry transformers
Removal Method:
- Commissioning a 100 ton Crane- required to safely lift each transformer
- A large crane was required due to the fact that National Recycling deemed it most cost effective and time efficient to remove the transformers without dismantling on site
- Arranging transport- heavy lift float trailers were needed to transport the (4) oversized transformers- oversized transport permits were acquired
Subcontractors were commissioned to remove the sensitive electrical equipment |
